Flexible pavements fail through the binder. Bitumen too soft rutts under summer traffic; too hard and it cracks; wrongly proportioned in the mix and the surface ravels within a season. On a maintenance-guaranteed contract, those failures land on the contractor's account — which is why highway laboratories exist and why they are audited.
Naugra Lab Equipments manufactures the complete bitumen and asphalt testing range to IS 1203 through IS 1220 with ASTM and AASHTO equivalents. For over 20 years we have supplied refineries and binder producers, hot-mix asphalt plants, highway and airport contractors, highway authority laboratories and commercial testing firms across more than 90 countries.
Penetration grading remains the most common binder specification. A standard needle under 100 g penetrates for five seconds at 25 °C, and depth in tenths of a millimetre gives the grade.
Our penetrometers are supplied in manual and digital versions with the full needle set, sample containers and transfer dish, resolving to 0.1 mm. The release mechanism drops cleanly without imparting side load — the detail that separates a repeatable instrument from one that produces scatter and arguments.
The ring and ball apparatus finds the temperature at which binder softens enough for a steel ball to sink a defined distance. We supply complete assemblies with rings, balls, centring guides, support frame, beaker and thermometer, including automatic units with programmed heating rates. In a laboratory issuing certificates, the programmed heating rate is what makes results comparable between operators.
The ductility testing machine stretches a briquette at controlled rate in a temperature-regulated bath. Ours feature thermostatic bath control, variable pulling speed and digital distance readout, with briquette moulds and base plates supplied.
Flash and fire point testing is a safety and handling requirement wherever binder is heated in bulk. We manufacture Cleveland open cup and Pensky-Martens closed cup apparatus in manual and automatic configurations.
Viscosity governs pumping and mixing behaviour at the plant. Our range covers tar viscometers, Saybolt Furol viscometers and capillary viscometer setups with constant temperature baths.
Marshall mix design is the working standard for asphalt specification across most of the world, and the mix design is a contractual document. A complete setup requires the Marshall stability testing machine with load and flow measurement, compaction pedestal with standard hammer, moulds and collars, specimen extruders, a water bath at test temperature and specific gravity apparatus for density and voids calculation.
We supply Marshall setups as a coordinated package rather than loose line items — the practical way to bring a mix design facility online without discovering a missing accessory mid-programme.
Verifying binder content in plant-produced or laid mix is the core production control test, and the one most often checked by the client's engineer. Bitumen extractors are manufactured in hand-operated and motorised centrifuge forms, and reflux extractors where the solvent method is specified, with filter rings and solvent handling accessories.
For laboratories moving away from solvent methods, ignition ovens determine binder content by loss on ignition without solvent handling — increasingly the preferred route on environmental grounds.
The thin film oven and rolling thin film oven simulate the ageing binder undergoes during mixing and in service, which is how short-term durability is predicted rather than hoped for. Stripping value apparatus assesses binder-aggregate adhesion in the presence of water — the mechanism behind a large share of premature pavement failure.
We build this equipment ourselves, with our own engineering and quality control. In bitumen testing, temperature control is the whole ballgame: an instrument that drifts by two degrees produces a result that is not wrong so much as meaningless. Our controlled units are built to hold.
Two decades of manufacturing sits behind these designs, and Indian production economics keep pricing competitive against imported equipment of the same specification.
We ship to over 90 countries with full export documentation and reliable freight handling. Our catalogue extends across civil, mechanical, electrical, electronics, educational, vocational and testing laboratories, so multi-facility procurement runs through one manufacturer. For new plant or site laboratories we handle supply, installation, commissioning, operator training and after-sales support as one scope.
Can you supply a complete Marshall mix design laboratory? Yes — stability machine, compactor, moulds, water bath and density apparatus quoted as one package.
Do you offer automatic penetrometers and softening point apparatus? Yes, both manual and automatic versions are manufactured.
Are instruments available to ASTM and AASHTO? Yes. Specify the governing standard when you enquire.
Send us your highway or plant laboratory requirement and we will prepare an itemised quotation.
